Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was a popular building material up until the year 2000. Mostly used for insulation and fire-proofing, it isn’t uncommon to find it in a large majority of houses today but, once disturbed, it becomes a potentially lethal substance.

There are several areas of your home that may contain Asbestos. It is most commonly found in flat or corrugated roofs, or in wall sheeting on external garages and sheds. However it can also be found in some lesser-known areas such as in or behind tiles, around pipes, under sinks or in sprayed coatings and paints. Knowing where it is could prevent exposure and serious harm.

Areas Where Asbestos Is Commonly Found Within The Home

Asbestos is commonly found in ceilings, roofs and within walls, but there are other areas that often go unnoticed. In particular, asbestos was used in products like ceiling tiles, floor tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, sprayed coatings and garage roof tiles and corrugated concrete sheets. It can also be found under sinks, behind tiles, around pipes and even in some old paint. Even very visible asbestos can be difficult to identify by an untrained eye, so we’ve put together a gallery of real life examples below, to help you identify some common areas where it can be found.
